Navy Yard shooting

Amidst all the chaos, loss of life and heartache we experienced yesterday when a gunman stormed the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. and opened fire, there was some positivity.

It’s hard to imagine the terror those in D.C. felt when they heard the gunshots followed by frantic running, but one man made it his duty to save a vulnerable employee before all else.

Omar Grant, a civilian employee who was on the first floor of the atrium when Aaron Alexis began his rampage, guided his seeing-impaired colleague, Lindwood, to safety without a second thought.

“We heard two shots and started wondering if that was the sound of someone dropping something or if they were really shots,” Grant told Yahoo News. “We heard three more shots and that’s when people started running out of the building and getting the hell out of there.”

Grant took Lindwood (who declined to give his last name) by the arm and guided him to the train as Navy Yard employees ran and gunshots could be heard in the distance.

And this picture, despite all that this nation has been through in the last 24 hours, is a testament to the love that will always overcome the hate in this world.

Talk about restoring our faith in humanity. We salute you Grant!
