A concerned father of two is now facing three counts of criminal charges after screaming at EMTs when his dying daughter fell off the gurney they were transporting her on.
Kevin Russell was charged with assault, disturbing the peace, and obstruction in the March 17 incident. He was handcuffed to a bench and pepper-sprayed by police just moments after finding his 16-year-old daughter lying in the park behind their Missouri home with a gunshot to the head.
Brooke had committed suicide. And in an attempt to save her, Russell rushed her to meet an ambulance at a local police station. But when her body fell off the gurney, he lost his temper, shouting at the EMT to help her. That’s when the police took action.
“To me time was everything, I was going ‘let’s go, get her to the hospital, hurry up, hurry up,” Kevin remembers saying to the EMT after being instructed by emergency services to meet the ambulance at the station instead of going straight to the hospital.
“I started screaming and said ‘do your f*****g job, get her to the hospital,” and the EMT put his finger in my face and said ‘calm down sir.’ I was screaming ‘please get her to the hospital.’
“And right about that time a police officer ran up on the sidewalk and I saw Brant go down.”
Brant, his son and Brooke’s brother, was also pepper-sprayed. And now Brant, who is in the military, has had his deployment postponed because of the charges.
“I was on the pavement, I couldn’t breathe and another officer put a knee in my back and told me to get up and he said if I didn’t get up he was going to tase me,” Brant said to KSPR.
They were arrested and taken into custody. Three hours later when father and son were released, they learned that Brooke had passed away.
The police, unapologetic, will not drop the charges against Russell and they want him to take an anger management class. But Russell, understandably upset by it all, just wants to mourn the death of his daughter.
“‘Keep me in my warm clothes because I hate the cold and bury me underneath a tree. I love you. The next life has more to offer me,’ wrote Brooke in her suicide letter.”
Wow. Our thoughts are with the Russell family at this time. Do you think the police took it too far?
