A woman in Mexico had to give birth to her baby on the grass outside of a medical center after the physicians turned her away.

The woman pictured above, 29-year-old Irma Lopez, was forced to squat and give birth outside and with no medication. After her painful ordeal, her tiny newborn son was still bound by the umbilical cord and lying on the ground.

The disturbing photograph above was taken by a passerby and has since led to the suspension of the head of the clinic.

The government of the southern state of Oaxaca announced Wednesday that it has suspended the health center’s director, Dr. Adrian Cruz, while officials conduct state and federal investigations into the October 2 incident.

Lopez said that she and her husband were turned away from the Rural Health Center of the village of San Felipe Jalapa de Diaz because a nurse insisted that the very pregnant and laboring woman was only eight months pregnant. Lopez was actually fully dilated at the time.

“I didn’t want to deliver like this. It was so ugly and with so much pain,” she said, adding she was alone for the birth because her husband was trying to persuade the nurse to call for help.

The couple, who are Mazatecs, do not speak Spanish, and could not understand much of what the nurse was telling them, which would later become the alibi for the nurse who kicked them out of the clinic.

Lopez and her baby, fortunately, are in good health. She was taken in by the clinic after the ordeal and discharged the same day. And she told reporters that she’s giving her new baby boy a very special name.

“I am naming him Salvador,” said Lopez, a name that means ‘Savior’ in English. “He really saved himself.”

We’re glad mom and baby are healthy and safe.
