Doubts about the new drug Krokodil hitting the United States can be left at the door now that two Chicago residents have spoken out about their intense use.

Krokodil, the infamous drug that combines phosphorous, codeine, and oil, and eats away at your skin, has been a hot topic since Monday. High usage was found in Russia – but it was recently reported that two sisters from a Chicago suburb are currently being treated for their own abuse of the drug.

According to Gawker, Amber and Angie Neitzel, who are heavy heroin users, took Krokodil and didn’t even know it. In an interview with ABC7 Chicago, the sisters talked about their determination to fight their addiction and the gruesome side effects they’ve encountered.

Their mother, a recovering heroin addict, also took the drug in May and noticed the disturbing skin effects while in the hospital.

“Four weeks later I went into the hospital and they surgically removed it and at the time, they didn’t even know that this was the Krokodil they were removing. They thought I just messed with a dirty needle or something like that.”

Amber, who has lost custody of her three children, was mortified by her and her boyfriend’s own side effects.

Amber described the process of Krokodil spreading on her arm: “It starts purple and then goes into a blister after five or six days.” Even worse is the description of her boyfriend’s Krokodil use and how he “actually had maggots coming out of his leg.”

The family is working on their road to recovery with treatments from Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL. Amber says the fight has been tough, but she will keep pushing on.

“I actually had a $100 dollar bag of the stuff and the moment I realized what it really was I chucked it away. As an addict, that is something you would never ever do.”

Now that both sisters have almost lost their lives, we hope people see that drugs are never the way to go.
