Michael Fortunato of Catfish fame has died at the age of 26.
You may remember Mike from his episode of Catfish titled “Mike and Ashley.” Mike and Ashley were in a seven-year relationship online and finally met through the hit MTV show.
The New Jersey native died from a pulmonary embolism due to deep vein thrombosis.
An MTV spokesperson released a statement regarding Mike’s shocking death:
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Fortunato. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”
Ashley Sawyer also spoke out on Mike’s death. The two didn’t continue their relationship after the show, but did plan on reuniting to spend New Year’s together in Atlanta.
“Me and him were very much in love… We were definitely moving forward,” Sawyer told MTV. ”If more people were like Mike, everybody would be a little happier in the world.”
