Some people are able to achieve fame overnight. That isn’t Marla Joy‘s story, however. Marla has been performing ever since she was a child, taking up classical piano when she was just four.

Music was always an important part of Marla’s life, even when times were hard. At the age of 14, Marla was on her own. About that time in her life, she says:

“While kids my age were thinking about what to wear to school, I was worried about where I was gonna sleep.”

During tough times, Marla would find solace in music; not pop music, either, but the classics, listening to stuff like Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin.

All that studying is starting to pay off. The singer has just completed an EP, working alongside hall-of-fame producer Syience (think Jay Z’s “Hollywood” or Ne-Yo’s “Angel”).

The first song to be released from the EP is the triumphant sounding “Getting By,” which was premièred by Relix Magazine.

“Getting By” is a catchy tune that has old school grit mixed with a 2013 sound.

Good music is good music. And this is good. Listen to it below.
