And yes…there was blackface.

It’s not even Halloween yet, and racially insensitive costumes are already popping up all over the internet.

This time, it involved a girl known as Olivia Mahon, an Australian native and new 21-year-old who hopes to go to Africa one day. But because she couldn’t make it, she decided to bring it Down Under.

And way down under.

Photos of white people in black and brown face, dressed in African garments and (shockingly) ferocious animals were shared on Olivia’s Facebook and not surprisingly, we all slapped our foreheads in a “WTF were they thinking?” manner.

Take it from Tumblr user “BlackinAsia,” who was alerted about the photos and took to posting them for the rest of the world to see.

Attendees were all asked to wear “African themed” clothing to depict the continent and this is what resulted… blackface, elephant and gorilla costumes, warpaint, native American headdresses (?!) and more…. I’m at a loss for words. And yes, this is from 2013.

The girl posted the pictures proudly and flatly refused to take them down when confronted by another individual about how they were racist apparently. Pictures were reported to Facebook weeks ago and they still have not been taken down.

Wow.

In case you ever wanted to know how white folks saw us black Africans… here you go.

As for Olivia, her mea culpa included a plea that she had much respect for the country and didn’t know others were going to show up in blackface. She posted on Tumblr:

It was my ‘African themed’ party and it was honestly made that theme because I have always wanted to go to Africa (to teach english) but haven’t made it there yet. In no way was this party intended to hurt anyones feelings or upset anyone at all. In fact as you can tell from the photos I dressed up as cleopatra, whilst MAJORITY of my guests came as animals, that can be found in africa or wore traditional african clothes or even dressed up as famous people who come from africa. If anything this was to celebrate the amazing country and people. However, some guest did decide to paint themselves, although this was in no way my intention or encouraged in the slightest.

You can read her full explanation here.

But I think these are explanatory enough…

Wouldn’t you agree?
