A Detroit mailman turned “firefighter” is being hailed a hero after saving a burning house he passed during his mail route.

And as if Darrian Crutcher didn’t do enough on that Tuesday, he also finished his mail route.

“I wouldn’t say a hero,” he told WJBK-TV. “It was a blessing for me to be at that spot at that particular time.”

It all started when Crutcher was delivering mail earlier this week. He noticed the house on fire and grabbed a garden hose to extinguish the blaze. The homeowner, Carolyn Patterson, was still inside.

“It really was burning like I don’t know what,” she remembered.

She says it was lit incense that started the fire in her house.

Crutcher battled the blaze with the hose until firefighters arrived. Once they arrived, they told him he did a great job and even tried to convince him to switch careers. But Crutcher didn’t seem interested.

“Went on about my business,” he said. He didn’t give it any thought, didn’t take a break or stop to get a drink of water.

“I said, ‘ok …the real firemen are here now so I can go ahead and do my job.”

However, he is thankful that he was there to do the job of saving Patterson’s burning house, and ultimately her life.

Job well done.
