Miley Cyrus is undisputedly the most “talked about” pop star of the year. Whether she’s jumping around onstage doing unimaginable things with a foam finger, or riding a wrecking ball completely naked, she knows just what to do to make sure that heads turn.

Now, the “We Don’t Stop” singer is standing her ground, claiming that she’s one of the world’s biggest feminists (we can’t wait to hear what Sinead O’Connor has to say about this one). Miley spoke out to BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, saying:

“I feel like I’m one of the biggest feminists in the world because I tell women to not be scared of anything…

As if smoking a joint on stage at the MTV EMAs wasn’t enough, the 20-year-old singer is speaking out and giving us all a piece of her mind, especially when it comes to double standards within the industry.

“No-one minds if a man goes topless on the beach, she said, adding: “So why can’t we?” I’m for anybody and anything, I don’t care what you want to do, what you want to look like.”

Miley also checked haters who might have anything to say about her feminist claims, and let them know that her antics are not contrived in the least bit.

“I don’t actually walk around all day twerking with my tongue out dressed as a teddy bear. I never worry about what I do on stage making me look bad. I think people if they actually knew me would be surprised at how normal I am.”

So, do you think that Miley has the right to call herself a “feminist?” While many have begun to develop arguments against her assertion as we speak, one must not immediately negate her bold claim.

Let’s delve a little deeper into this. Is Miley justified in her statement? While Miley may be a far cry from women like Susan B. Anthony or Abigail Adams, she may very well be the new face of the millennial feminist movement.

Take a look below at 7 reasons why the singer has the right to call herself a feminist.

1. She embraces her sexuality:

While many quip that this in fact serves as the antithesis to the feminist movement, it is just as easy to counter that argument. Miley is right in pointing out the double standard between men and women, and disproves many theorists by putting her body all out there. Whether it be in a nude-latex short set or nothing at all, she recently had people drooling after her controversial Terry Richardson photoshoot – where she left nothing to the imagination.

2. She’s not ready to be a housewife just yet:

At one point, Miley was living a very domesticated life with her then-fiance, actor Liam Hemsworth. The two were often spotted being lovey-dovey and were slated to walk down the aisle. Until it all came crashing down. Soon, Miley ditched the long locks for bleach blonde tresses and a semi-shaved head. Now Miley claims to be working on herself and her craft, and is loving the so-called single life, while breaking traditional societal norms in the process. Case in point: she doesn’t need a man to be successful.

3. She admits that she’s not perfect and owns up to her flaws:

Nothing foretells a strong woman more then one who maintains confidence while admitting that she’s not perfect. Miley recently said, “I’m definitely crazy but I’m normal. I feel like [I am] socially probably more acceptable than a lot of people in this industry because I’ve just always grown up around this and so I never have any kind of attitude.”

4. She stands up for a cause:

If you check out Miley’s Instagram page, then you would know just how much she loves her dogs. Miley has given her voice to charities such as Saving Spot! Rescue, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding homes for shelter dogs in areas with high rates of euthanasia.

5. She ain’t daddy’s little girl anymore:

When Miley first hit the scene, she not only stared on the Hannah Montana show with her country-music star dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, but even posed with him in a controversial photoshoot with famed photographer Annie Leibovitz in 2008. Nowadays, we hardly hear about her father and often see Miley on the scene with her momager, saying, “My mom is my homie. If I win, she wins. Not because she’s my manager, because she’s my mom.” Girl power.

6. She just doesn’t give a flying f%ck what you think:

We all know it. Miley wears what she wants, when she wants, and collaborates with whom she wants. Whether she is shooting back at critics, twerking on married men or boasting about doing illicit drugs – she seems to just not care what anyone thinks. We could all use a little more of that mindset.

7. She uses her power to build her empire:

Miley is everywhere! From recently hosting and performing on SNL, to performing at the EMAs, Miley has covered numerous big name magazines. Her most recent album, Bangerz, shot to #1 on the Billboard chart and she currently has over 15 million Twitter followers. Talk about star power.
