Virginia State Democrat Sen. Creigh Deeds was found with a stab wound in his home on Tuesday morning. His son Austin “Gus” Deeds was found dead from a gunshot wound.

Now, Democratic sources are telling NBC that Gus, 24, embraced by his father in the picture above, stabbed his dad before fatally shooting himself.

Deeds is currently in critical condition in the intensive care unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, the sources said.

The incident happened in Creigh Deeds’ Bath County home (property seen in the picture below), to which police were called at 7:25 a.m. Deeds was airlifted to the medical center.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

“The news from this morning is utterly heartbreaking,” said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell. “Creigh Deeds is an exceptional and committed public servant who has always done what he believes is best for Virginia and who gives his all to public service.”

During a press conference, VA police confirmed that they are “not seeking any suspects at this time.”

In 2009, Deeds lost to Republican McDonnell in the Virginia governor’s race. That same year Gus, then 20, was arrested in Bath County for alcohol possession, according to the Virginia Pilot.

We’re wishing Deeds a speedy recovery. Our prayers are with his family at this time.
