So this happened.

Three San Jose State University students in California are facing hate crime charges after clamping a bike lock around the neck of their black roommate and decorating their suite with Confederate flags and Nazi symbols.

According to CNN, the students also posted photos of Adolf Hitler in their rooms and had a white board with a racial epithet in plain view.

And then…there was this:

The defendants are accused of nicknaming their black roommate “Three-Fifths,” an apparent reference to a U.S. constitutional provision that counted slaves as “three-fifths of all other persons,” prosecutors said.

The students, Logan Beaschler, 18, of Bakersfield; Joseph Bomgardner, 19, of Clovis; and Colin Warren, 18, of Woodacre — are charged with misdemeanor hate crime and battery, the Santa Clara district attorney’s office said. Beaschler was booked in the Santa Clara County Jail on Thursday, with bail set at $15,000.

All three face a maximum sentence of one year in county jail if convicted.

The four other roommates in the suite will not be charged, although they refused to step in and stop the bullying, which began in August.

As for the victim, who has not been named by prosecutors, he’s nursing a minor injury to his neck after trying to fight the students off.

Are we sure it’s 2013?
