Unbelievable!
An 82-year old Colombian woman was probably shocked out of her mind when she learned she’s been carrying around a fetus in her abdomen for over 40 years.
The woman was having stomach pains and though doctors originally believed it was because of a bug, scans showed she was suffering from an extremely rare condition where a woman carries a lithopedion, also known as a “stone baby.”
This occurs when a fetus develops outside of the womb. Dr. Kamir Ramirez of Bogota’s Tunjuelito Hospital told NTD:
“This happens because the fetus does not develop in the uterus because it has moved to another place.”
In this case it was his patient’s abdomen, which is not a healthy place for a baby to grow. And according to NBC News:
“It’s a rare phenomenon that occurs when a pregnancy fails and the fetus calcifies while still in the mother’s body.”
Wow! The elderly woman plans on undergoing surgery to have the “stone baby” removed. We sincerely hope all goes well.
