An Oakland teen is currently on life support after her tonsil surgery went terribly wrong.

According to CBS Sacramento, 13-year-old Jahi McMath is brain dead after complications with her tonsillectomy last week.

Doctors said the surgery would help with Jahi’s sleep apnea, but there were complications during her recovery last week. Her mother Nailah Winkfield said Jahi had “actual clots” sliding out of her mouth, which her mother was told to catch in a cup for hospital staff to measure.

Her family is demanding the Oakland Children’s Hospital conduct a full investigation to find out what happened to the eighth grader. Although there aren’t any details on what went wrong during the surgery, Jahi’s mother is upset because she feels that the hospital is forcing her to pull the plug on her daughter.

“They just have a social worker follow me around all day long asking me ‘do you have any other family that needs to see her?’ like trying to put a rush on it,” Winkfield said. “I am not leaving unless she leaves with me because I will not let them pull the plug on my child.”

The family also talked to San Jose Mercury News and described the teen as a happy young girl.

Family members describe Jahi as a well-behaved, bubbly teen who has been looking forward to spending the holidays with family and attending an eighth-grade dinner dance at E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts.

We hope that the family gets the answers that they deserve in the tragic accident.
