You can exhale now. The first big awards show red carpet of the season is being rolled up. The critiquing claws are coming out, and the trend forecasting is in full swing. But of course, the most important news of the moment is who was the best dressed on the red carpet at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Some of the guests had a bit too much to drink (we’re looking at you, Jacqueline Bisset) some of them got a bit too much fabric involved (yes, Paula Patton, that shade is directed at you) but all-in-all, the red carpet was a strong start to awards season fashion.

While we aren’t in the business of ranking looks numerically, we have selected our favorite looks from tonight’s red carpet. Topping our favorites are of course, the stunning Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren, Olivia Wilde in Gucci and a few more stunning ladies. Check out some close-up photos of the best dressed of the night below.

EMMA ROBERTS

Designer: Lanvin

The American Horror Story: Coven actress wore a custom Lanvin gown, turquoise chandelier earrings and a Kotur clutch for a perfect classic, yet subtle look. Her hair was slicked back into a perfect bun to allow the earrings to take the spotlight. The dress could have taken the Ursula route, but looked perfect on her svelte figure.

CATE BLANCHETT

Designer: Armani

We don’t normally look to Cate to dominate the best dressed list, but she brought her A-game with this look. The black lace Armani Couture dress featured a high collar and a mermaid bottom gown details. The best part of the ‘fit was the back, featuring a deep v and wing-like accents.

OLIVIA WILDE

Designer: Gucci

We’d be lying if we said Olivia’s baby bump didn’t add to this darling Gucci look she was sporting tonight. The actress looked nothing short of dazzling in a full-length shimmering Gucci Première gown. Olivia brought the look together with a cylinder Emm Kuo clutch, and the perfect color Charlotte Olympia shoes. Emerald may have been the color of 2013, but she showed it love in 2014.

LUPITA NYONG’O

Designer: Ralph Lauren

Oh, Lupita, we knew you would bring your A-game, but never in a million red carpet fibers would we envision the arrival of a side-part flat top, and we couldn’t love you any more for it. The actress played it safe in simple high-end Ralph Lauren in a perfect red hue from the brand’s Spring 2014 runway.

SANDRA BULLOCK

Designer: Prabal Gurung

It’s not enough for Sandra Bullock to sweep every awards show in history, but she always looks stunning while doing it. Tonight she opted for an unconventional gown from Prabal Gurung, and while the dress wasn’t what we expected, she pulled it together with a perfect fit and a side pony fit for the red carpet.
