The family of Jasmine Benjamin can now rest as her ex- boyfriend Darien Meheux was sentence to life in prison for her murder.

Jasmine Benjamin, 18, a student at Valdosta State University was found dead in her dorm’s study room in Nov 2012. What was worse about the family’s loss was how they find out-via Facebook.

In March 2013, her ex boyfriend Darien Meheux turned himself into authorities and charged with her death. According to WCTV, with his lawyers claiming his innocence, the jury found the 18-year-old guilty of strangling Jasmine to death. Upon sentencing, Meheaux cut off Jasmine’s family with a passive-aggressive apology.

“Jasmine was an amazing person,” read Meheux. “She was special and I cared about her a lot. I loved Jasmine. I loved being with her. But I was not in love her. I love Mrs. Jackson. I love her daughters, all of them.”

While a court official called it the “least remorseful apology she’s heard in 31 years,” Jasmine’s family were happy with the verdict.

“There are no more weddings to go to. No graduations to go to,” said James Jackson, Benjamin’s stepfather.

After an agonizing two years, we’re glad that Jasmine’s family can finally heal.
