Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was a day made to reflect on the dream of equality, but sometimes the message slips through the cracks. The image of a white woman comfortably perched on a “black woman bondage chair” was a prime example of that.
Yesterday, Miroslava Duma’s new online magazine Buro 247 published an article on Russian socialite Dasha Zhukova. The seemingly innocent article about her life, fashion and career was paired with an image of the Editor-in-Chief of Garage Magazine comfortably perched on an extremely life-like black mannequin, who is naked save for a pair of leather-look black panties, a dominatrix-style belt, elbow-length gloves and knee-high boots.
The dummy is lying on her back with her knees bent and a cushion, which Zhukova is sitting on, is balanced on her bottom.
Claire over at Fashion Bomb Daily was one of the first to spot the shot, which she described as:
As Dasha stares out at the camera in the light filled room, she appears the total opposite of the compromised black woman on the floor. The message: white dominance and superiority, articulated in a seemingly serene yet overtly degrading way.
Sigh. Of course, as much of these things go, the photos were quickly taken down from Dasha Zhukova’s social media sites, and the chair was later cropped out of the images on Buro 247. When the Internet speaks, the masses listen.
