Sorry, smokers. CVS Pharmacy will stop selling tobacco products at its more than 7,600 drugstores in the nation by October. Reason? CVS CEO Larry Merlo says the company decided it can no longer sell cigarettes at places where it also provides health care. The move will cost them $2 billion a year, but they are willing to take the blow for the long-term benefits. “Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy is simply the right thing to do for the good of our customers and our company,” the company said in a statement. “The sale of tobacco products is inconsistent with our purpose – helping people on their path to better health.” Read about it here…[AP]

Talk about taking a stand. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio will be one of the few not drinking and partying during the city’s 250-year-old St. Patrick’s Day march and for good reason — in support of gay rights. De Blasio objects to the ban put in place on people who carry gay-pride signs. “I will be participating in a number of other events to honor the Irish heritage of this city, but I simply disagree with the organizers of that parade,” he said. He will be the first mayor in over 20 years not to march in the famous parade. Sixteen children were rescued and 45 others arrested on sex trafficking and related offenses when local and federal authorities busted a Super Bowl sex ring this week. New York City police worked with counterparts in Westchester County and the FBI to conduct the investigation. Officials are now working to reunite the sex workers with their families and provide medical care and shelter for those with no place to go. Sex trafficking is a year-round problem, but statistics show Super Bowls are the single largest human trafficking incidents in the country. Read about it here…[CNN]

So this happened. Chairman of the Project 21 National Leadership Network of Black Conservatives isn’t excited about Black History Month and doesn’t think you should be either. Mychal Massie wrote a column for World Net Daily lamenting that public school children aren’t told about all the bad things black people are responsible for nowadays. Oh? “Public school children will be immersed in a 28-day vat of a factually flawed and at times fictional history of how bad the blacks had it in America, and they will hear that whites are privileged and their ancestors had slaves, blah-blah-blah,” wrote Massie. He added that Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager shot and killed by George Zimmerman, will be “lauded for sainthood,” while the brutal slayings of two British tourists by a black teenager will go unnoticed during Black History Month. A Mobile, Alabama woman was kicked out of court for publicly breastfeeding her baby, although Alabama law states that a woman has the right to breastfeed in public. But that didn’t stop a court officer from approaching Jeanna Harris, a mother of five, and asking her to get out. Why? Court officials told the local news station they were asked by other people in the court to have Harris moved. Court officers say they didn’t break any state laws because they provided Harris with another area to nurse her baby. Oh…so she was asked to leave because people were uncomfortable? So why do we have laws again? Read about it here…[Jezebel]
