Anytime Nicki Minaj does something, controversy seems to follow.

The latest came on Wednesday, when Nicki put out her latest single, “Lookin’ Ass Nigga.” Along with the video came the single’s cover, which features the iconic picture of Malcolm X looking out the window, holding a gun.

People were not happy.

So Nicki took to Instagram, posting this remorseful comment:

What seems to be the issue now? Do you have a problem with me referring to the people Malcolm X was ready to pull his gun out on as Lookin Ass Niggaz? Well, I apologize. That was never the official artwork nor is this an official single. This is a conversation. Not a single. I am in the video shooting at Lookin Ass Niggaz and there happened to be an iconic photo of Malcolm X ready to do the same thing for what he believed in!!!! It is in no way to undermine his efforts and legacy. I apologize to the Malcolm X estate if the meaning of the photo was misconstrued. The word “nigga” causes so much debate in our community while the “nigga” behavior gets praised and worship. Let’s not. Apologies again to his family. I have nothing but respect an adoration for u. The photo was removed hours ago. Thank you

Nicki also called into the Angie Martinez Show to talk about the picture and other pressing Minaj news.

On “Lookin’ Ass Nigga” and the Malcolm X controversy, Nicki says:

“There’s so many records that come out daily, and they’re bashing females. And I feel like I’m in a position to put out a record to empower women in our way…we never get a chance to talk crazy. We don’t always want to tell you “I love you…”

…Someone sent me that picture..it was almost parallel. He has a big gun and he’s ready to shoot at a ‘lookin ass [bleep]’. This is one of the most memorable people in black history who voiced his opinion no matter what…I definitely didn’t want to offend his legacy.

Another interesting point came when she spoke about her and Drake’s relationship. (Drake said that he’s “not even talking to Nicki” on “Tuscan Leather”).

So what does Nicki say?

“Drake and I are great…he was the one to tell me to get on “Danny Glover.” I think the whole team feels so together right now.”

Nicki didn’t give many details about her upcoming The Pink Print album, only that she wouldn’t pull a Beyonce.
