Another Republican sticks his foot in his mouth when it comes to his opinions about women and their reproductive rights. Virginia Senator Steve Martin is under fire after calling women “baby hosts” in a Facebook rant against a pro-life coalition. The rant was a response to a Valentine’s Day card the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition sent him arguing that abortion was included in a range of health care. “Once a child does exist in your womb, I’m not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child’s host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn’t want it,” read his post. He later edited his post Monday to swap the identification out with “the bearer of the child” instead. Smooth. [NYDailyNews]
Conservative superstar Ted Nugent is at it again. The National Rifle Association board member suggested that the Obama administration is causing a “power struggle between the different races,” comparing the administration to Nazi Germany on the Dennis Miller radio show. Uganda is proving, yet again, that they are on the wrong side of history. Just a day after President Yoweri Museveni signed an anti-gay bill into law, a Ugandan newspaper published a list Tuesday of what it called the country’s “200 top” homosexuals, outing some Ugandans who previously had not identified themselves as gay. In response, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry warned that Washington could cut aid to the government of the East African nation. Read about it here…[HuffPost]
So this is happening. In Arizona, Gov. Jan Brewer (R) is deciding whether to sign a controversial “license to discriminate” bill passed by the legislature last week. Basically, the bill would allow businesses to use religion as an excuse to legally refuse service to LGBT people. Shocking, we know. However, she is receiving a lot of encouragement to veto the bill from groups and individuals across the state, including one lawmaker who even voted for it. Talk about the silver lining.
