A mall in Indiana is under fire after they posted a sign that requested all patrons lower their hooded sweatshirts when entering the establishment.

Because, you know…hoodies are dangerous. Not gun-wielding volunteer neighborhood watchmen with an unreasonable fear of little black boys.

The signs read, “For the safety and well-being of everyone, please lower your hoodie,” and are posted at the entrances of the Mounds Mall in Anderson, Ind.

According to The Root:

The mall’s general manager claims that the signs were “requested by local law enforcement,” saying that it is for security and stressing to the Herald Bulletin that the mall was not asking potential customers to remove their hoodies, just to lower the hoods upon entering the mall. He also added that as it warms up, the signs would be removed.

Hooded shirts are also mentioned in the mall’s Code of Conduct:

“Appropriate, non-offensive attire; shirts and shoes must be worn; no hoodies or other apparel that will disguise identity,” according to the Herald Bulletin.

Because hats don’t do the same thing.

In any case, this mall may as well be run by Geraldo Rivera, who quipped after the death of Trayvon Martin (who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt) that his “gangsta” apparel was as much responsible for his death as Zimmerman’s gun.

Which both blames the victim and unfairly aligns a piece of clothing with danger. And ridiculously so.
