Who says soul food can’t be healthy? With the lingering stigma of soul food clogging arteries and expanding waistlines, soul food restaurants all over the country are creating healthy (and green) alternatives for everyone to enjoy.

For the second week of our Eating Green Series, take a look at some great soul food date spots. Your tummy will thank you!

Paschal’s

(Atlanta, Georgia)

Named one of the best soul food spots in the city, Paschal’s gives customers what they want: great decor and flavorful dishes. Some standouts are the Pan Seared Jumbo Lump Crab Cakes, the Half Herb Roasted Chicken, and the memorable Sunday brunch menu. Check it out here.

Sylvia’s Restaurant of Harlem

(Harlem, New York)

Harlem’s famous Sylvia’s restaurant has a reputation for having the best soul food around. For over 50 years, the restaurant has hosted the likes of Bill Clinton, President Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson and the late Nelson Mandela. The menu isn’t the healthiest on the list, but customers can always find a healthy alternative like the seafood or a festive salad.

The Original Soul Vegetarian

(Chicago, Illinois)

The number of vegan soul food spots have steadily grown over the years, but nothing beats the original. Chi-town’s vegan restaurant has been around for 30 years; you know, before it was cool to be a vegan. Every dish is plant-based and free of chemicals and pesticides. It’s also rice and sugar free. Check out the menu here.

The Land Of Kush

(Baltimore, Maryland)

You can never go wrong with a tasty stir-fry dish. Baltimore’s The Land Of Kush gives customers creative and light soul food vegan dishes. Their lentil burgers are tempting for vegans and the crab cakes and chicken salad have enough kick to please anyone. Their campaign to go green with easy recipes and smoothies make it easy to make the change. Check it out here.
