Shocking surveillance footage of the East Harlem, NYC gas explosion has emerged, showing the sheer power of the blast that brought down two buildings and tragically killed eight last Wednesday.

In the video, obtained by CBS, you can see a man crossing the street and nearly getting knocked off his feet while dodging debris falling from the building. A street sign and a tree tremble nearby as the blast continues and soon, black smoke and a dusty cloud fill the camera lens, marking the collapse and devastation of the two buildings at 1646 Park Avenue.

Investigators believe a gas leak caused the explosion, but their investigation continues.

According to the NY Post:

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board had hoped to begin pressure-testing gas lines to find where the leak occurred but said tests will likely be pushed back to Monday to allow the FDNY to clear the area.

“It takes time to do investigations, document and voucher evidence and continue with forensics,” said FDNY spokesman Jim Long.

“We’re going to be looking at every piece of evidence both to get an understanding of what occurred and why.”

On Sunday, East Harlem residents paying their respects to the victims of the blast gathered at churches across the neighborhood to pray. Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife, Chirlane McCray, were among those in the congregation at two Harlem churches to reflect on the incident.

“If there’s one thing New Yorkers can count on when there’s a crisis, it’s other New Yorkers,” McCray said.

Our prayers and condolences to those who lost loved ones in this tragic accident.
