SXSW has come and gone, but it’s only the beginning of our favorite season of the year.
It would be spring, but it’s still way too cold and we aren’t down with that (hint, hint Mother Nature). But a little bad weather up east isn’t stopping us from taking in all the sun and shows elsewhere, because it’s finally music festival season and the beat must go on.
Think about all the fun there is to be had within the next several months–between getting access to see your favorite musicians all in one place and partying all night long with newfound festival friends, the last thing you’ll want to worry about is what to wear. So, that’s where we come in.
You might’ve missed SXSW, but there are at least seven other festivals for you–and that’s a whole lotta outfits. So, without further ado, here’s your style guide for the 2014 music festival season.
Coachella – Indio Valley, CA (April 11-13, 18-20)
Arguably the most anticipated music festival of the year, Coachella is where festival-goers let their free-spirits fly. It’s all about three F’s: florals, fringe and flat shoes–you’ll be wandering the hot desert, so comfort is key. And with the weather nearing 100-degrees, there’s no doubt it’ll be warranted to wear all the crop tops and short-shorts in the land.
The Roots Picnic – Philadelphia, PA (May 31)
The seventh annual Roots Picnic will deliver hip-hop with a side of humidity, as it is set in the City of Brotherly Love just before the start of summer. You’ll want to go with a look that’s easy and breezy, but you can still make a statement by being bold with color and prints.
Governors Ball – Randall’s Island, NYC (June 6-8)
You’ll find some of the most fashion-forward festival-goers at Governors Ball this summer, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be snapped by photogs for your festival fashion as you make you way over to see Outkast or Tyler, the Creator perform. But, just like the music lineup, everyone in the crowd is so diverse, and so are their looks. You can show off your best street style, but be careful: last year, the ball kicked off with storms, so be prepared for anything, rain or shine.
Bonnaroo – Manchester, TN (June 12-15)
To become a full-blown Bonnaroovian, you’ve gotta know how to dress the part. Because the festival takes place on a 700-acre farm, you can channel your country roots and prepare to get buckwild with a mix of acts like Kanye West, Skrillex, Zedd, and many, many more on the lineup. You’ll be among 80,000 other attendees trying to beat the Tennessee heat before it cools down at night, so style smart: tie a flannel or sweater around your waist and keep warm with it when the weather permits.
Lollapalooza – Chicago, IL (August 1-3)
While temps for other festivals may be high and dry, the weather has been a bit bipolar in the past during Lollapalooza. Flash floods and severe storms may or may not be in the forecast, but for the most part, the weather will be warm in the Windy City. Lollapalooza attendees are always some of the trendiest, and there’s plenty of room to show off your style. Seeing as how the festival takes place in downtown Chicago, a Lolla look along the lines of street chic would be perfect (and don’t forget to pack an umbrella, just in case!)
Electric Daisy Carnival – Las Vegas, New York, Orlando (Various dates)
The biggest rave of the year is getting ready to hit the road, and with three pit stops in the United States, it’s time to prepare for a party near you. Get bright and bold in neon and fun pieces you’d typically only bust out during Halloween, and rage on with the top EDM artists from around the world.
Made in America – Philadelphia, PA (TBD)
Usually taking place around Labor Day, Made in America typically marks the end of the musical festival season. But that doesn’t mean attendees are any less fashionable than they were elsewhere–in fact, it’s another festival that always stands out when it comes to style. Feel free to keep it casual, but don’t forget to end things off with a fashionable bang.
