You’re probably pissed about your bracket or still laughing about Mercer’s win over Duke, but this is one March Madness story you don’t want to miss.

Michigan State basketball star Adreian Payne met 8-year-old Lacey Holsworth two years ago when she was getting treatment for neuroblastoma, an aggressive cancer of the nerve tissue and his team was visiting the hospital.

But their inspiring relationship didn’t stop there. Payne cites Lacey as his inspiration to push through when the going gets rough, describing his connection with her family since the first day they met.

“She’s like a sister to me,” Payne says in the segment. “I love him,” Lacey declares.

The two, if you haven’t gathered, may be an odd couple, but according to them, they are best friends.

Payne attended a fundraiser for Lacey, and Lacey, who was Payne’s guest on senior night, helped him cut down the net after Michigan State won the Big Ten tournament.

Watch their inspiring story above to learn more about Lacey’s battle with cancer and try not to cry happy tears.
