It’s not everyday you see a woman on a racetrack going 200mph. Rarer to see a vegetarian on the track. Even rarer still, to see a driver who is an environmental activist and drives a carbon free car on her off time, powered “by sunshine” as she likes to say- specifically from her roof. This woman, named by Discovery’s Planet Green, as the #1 Eco Athlete in the world and by Sports Illustrated as one of the top ten female race car drivers in the world, is Leilani Munter and she is coming for the captive Orca/Whale/Dolphin trade-hard.
Leilani has the opportunity to race at Talladega Superspeedway on May 3, 2014. The race will be televised live on Fox Sports 1, available in 90 million homes in North America. Leilani wants to use this incredible opportunity to promote the film “Blackfish” by driving a Blackfish emblazoned car, similar to what she raced in 2012 with her “The Cove”car supporting the academy award winning documentary. As many know, “Blackfish” tells the story of Tilikum, a performing killer whale that killed several people while in captivity. Brought to the masses by director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiled shocking footage and emotional interviews that explored the orcas extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry. The way to help these suffering sea creatures is simple, stop the demand for captive animals by refusing to buy tickets to aquariums and swim with dolphin programs. The more people learn about he plight of these animals the better informed they will be. In order to bring the message that captivity kills to millions of viewers, it will cost $115,000 for Leilani to enter the race with a top race team. Leilani has a good shot at becoming the first woman to win an ARCA race but more significantly, to be a significant force in helping to win the fight against cetacean captivity that is responsible for miserable lives of imprisoned captive animals as well as being the leading cause of tens of thousands of dolphin deaths each year in the dolphin drives in Japan. Leilani is appealing the public to get her Blackfish car on the road so that the days of performing animals will be behind us.
