Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice was indicted on Thursday for charges stemming from a disturbing video of him manhandling his unconscious fiancée in an Atlantic City elevator.

He was arrested on charges that he beat Janay Palmer on Feb 15.

According to the Daily Mail:

Atlantic City police originally arrested both Rice and Janay Palmer on simple assault charges after shocking video footage of the incident at the Revel Casino emerged, but have since dropped the charges against Palmer. Hotel surveillance cameras captured the Super Bowl XLVII champion dragging Palmer, the mother of his daughter, by her hair out of an elevator early Feb 15 while unconscious, but he claimed she had also struck him.

Rice was charged with third-degree aggravated assault. He could spend three to five years in prison if convicted.

Michael Diamondstein, an attorney for Rice, said last month that he was hopeful that, after an investigation, “the matter turns out to be little more than a misunderstanding.” But a grand jury couldn’t overlook the disturbing video, leading to Rice’s indictment.

Following the incident, the Ravens released a statement:

“We are aware of the Friday night situation with Ray Rice and his fiancée. We have spoken with Ray, and know that they returned home together after being detained.”

They have since remained silent about Rice’s legal woes. We’ll keep you updated with the latest.
