Looks like someone got a springtime makeover.
Lorde knows that there’s nothing more badass than an all-black ensemble, but for her latest cover of Canada’s Fashion magazine, she’s a bronzy, blossoming beauty – just in time for spring. The teenage two-time Grammy winner is looking quite girly, wearing a golden Dolce & Gabbana masterpiece that’s a far departure from her typical wardrobe of what she calls her “power clothes.”
But underneath all that glitz and glam and those luxurious locks of hers is the Lorde we all know and love–you can take the dark lipstick off of the girl, but the black nail polish? That stays.
Fashion recently caught up with the New Zealand superstar in between two of her many sold-out shows, and she talked about her love of menswear, being called the Sylvia Plath of pop music, and her biggest influence.

On being compared to Sylvia Plath:
“Never for a second would I put myself beside a genius like Sylvia Plath! I may have specific tastes but I’m not trying to be avant-garde with my approach or my music. I like indie [rock], pop and literature. I like to play with them but that doesn’t make me a genius.”
On her love of menswear:
“Jackets and pants are my power clothes. I agree with Annie Lennox when she said, “wearing a suit is like wearing armour.” I wore pants and a shirt at the Grammys because it made me feel confident. I remember looking at early photos of Patti Smith when she was wearing those men’s shirts she chopped off at the sleeve. That, to me, is the strongest look in the world.”
On her preferred work attire:
“A lot of my stage clothes are suits, jackets and trousers that come from designers like Philip Lim and Stella McCartney. I’m a fan of Céline and Comme Des Garçons too because the clothes don’t look contrived and they don’t look like they are trying too hard.”
On one of her biggest influences:
“Author Tobias Wolff is my hero. In terms of creating perfectly formed sentences and paragraphs and paying attention to word selection—Tobias Wolf is awesome. He’s been writing short fiction a long time but I read a collection called The Night In Question that blew me away.”
