It seemed like a chore when all you wanted to do was go outside to play, but if given the chance to have mom do your hair every day, we’re sure you’d take it.

Let’s face it — it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. As time-consuming as it could be (and sitting still that long as a child was torture), having someone moisturize, braid, twist, and play in your hair is a real treat.

If only we knew then…

Now you have to prod and pull and experiment and cry in front of the mirror because your twist outs aren’t doing what you want them to do and the 7:45 G train has already left the station and now you’re late for work and if you know anything about NYC’s G train, you know it runs only every 30 minutes.

I mean, that’s a pretty personal run-on sentence. But if you get it…you get it.

Harping on how convenient it was for someone else to deal with your gloriously thick mane will make you pretty sad, but this nostalgic list of things we miss about it is sure to take you on a pleasant trip down black girl hair lane.

Well, almost pleasant.

The smell of this…

Ain’t nothing like it…

Or this…

The original PINK…

The Barrette Box…

Until you lose one at school and your mom freaks…

Having someone wash your hair for you…

No one warned us that we’d have to pay for it as adults…

Getting those fresh beaded braids for the summer…

Every. Single. Summer.

Using this and thinking your hair would grow from all those herbs…

Still waiting for that extra inch of hair…

Feeling like a complete boss because your mom put zig zags in your hair…

NOW THIS IS AN EPIC BRAID LEVEL, KENDALL JENNER!

Having the best ballie game in town…

Or whatever your region calls these plastic ball hair ties that are a staple in every black girl’s barrette box…

That first time we got to wrap our doobie…

Because that definitely meant…”I’m a GROOOOOWN WOMAN!”

But…about this part…

We can do without….
