The University of Alabama is finally joining the 21st century. UA will integrate Greek Life thanks to new enrollment laws that allow anyone to join any group they like.

According to Think Progress, the University of Alabama came under fire last year for refusing a black female student with a 4.3 GPA acceptance from all 16 sororities on campus.

Last week Alabama’s Student Senate passed a resolution supporting the complete integration of Greek life at the university. In its regular meeting, the new Student Government Association Senate approved a resolution proposed by SGA President Hamilton Bloom to support the complete integration of The University of Alabama’s Greek system last Thursday. Earlier in the day, the SGA Student Judiciary also announced its decision to uphold penalties imposed on Vice President for Student Affairs Stephen Keller by the Elections Board.

With the school finally leaving the rules of yesteryear behind, the University has still been experiencing self segregation within the student body, as some students are less likely to reach out of their age, race, or gender groups to engage with others on campus.

Self-segregation takes many forms. Americans are increasingly dividing themselves geographically along a number of lines -– college education, political beliefs, level of income and religion. Race is just one of many elements of this “Big Sort,” but it is also compounded by the others. With that in mind, Rutgers University Professor Nancy DiTomaso believes that racial integration on college campuses is paramount.

The new resolution has allowed over 10 students into the Greek family of their choosing after meeting the correct qualifications.

Here’s to a new era.
