Lorde? Is that you?

Although she typically rocks the hell out of a dark plum lipstick, it’s always nice to see the 17-year-old lighten up for a change. And for her latest cover, the “Queen of Darkness,” as she’s been dubbed in the past, is showing off her softer side, all wrapped up in a pretty plaid bow.

Teen Vogue tapped the two-time Grammy-winning artist for their music issue – because who else would be more fitting than the New-Zealand native that’s been conquering the world of music, one moody song at a time? But don’t get it twisted; Lorde may be a self-proclaimed “weirdo,” but she’s much more than the “grumpy girl” she’s been boxed in as, she tells the glossy. Keep on reading for some excerpts from her interview.

On her personal style:

“There are a lot of expectations in this industry about looking a certain way and having a certain kind of appeal,” she says. “I am feminine, but I really love dressing in boys’ clothes too. I guess that’s why I get labeled as ‘the grumpy girl,’ because I don’t play into that.”

On social media:

“I like Twitter because it’s a good direct link to people. You just reach out to someone you like and say, ‘Follow me please, and then we can talk.’ I really like Instagram as well. It’s a good one, very simple. I’m also on Facebook and Tumblr.”

On her new life:

“Living in New Zealand, you don’t get these experiences. I spent so much time in my room before. My life is so wild right now. For me to be able to do something I really enjoy and for that to get me out in the world—to South America, to here, to London—every day I kick myself, I’m so lucky.”

Before the issue hits stands April 29, watch part of her exclusive interview and check out some behind-the-scenes shots below.
