A businessman in the Indian capital of Delhi is recovering after doctors retrieved 12 gold bars from his stomach.

The 63-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after complaining about stomach troubles, having problems defecating, and vomiting. He told doctors he swallowed a bottle cap in anger after fighting with his wife.

Because apparently that’s a normal thing to do when you’re upset with someone.

But when surgeons operated, they found more than a trivial bottle cap, pulling 12 mini gold bars weighing nearly 400g (14oz) from his stomach.

We’re guessing his response was “How did that get there?

Doctors, who performed the operation on 9 April, told the BBC that police and customs authorities had questioned the businessman and confiscated the gold.

There’s no word on why he swallowed the precious metal, but India is the world’s largest consumer of gold and has seen a record rise in smuggling after a rise in duty on imports of metal to curb the current account deficit.

Last year India’s government hiked the import duty on gold three times to curb demand for the precious metal. Gold imports, which had peaked at 162,000kg in May 2013, came down to 19,300kg in November after the hike.

Ah. Makes more sense now. Eat gold, shit a pot of gold, and avoid the trouble of importing gold. We guess.
