Though people of all races are afforded more opportunity these days, the truth is that slavery will have an impact on race relations for generations to come.

Belle takes us back to a time when those with darker complexions could not enjoy the same luxuries as their lighter counterparts, even if they were of a high social standing. The controversial upcoming film is inspired by the true story of Dido Elizabeth Belle, who was the mixed and illegitimate daughter of a Royal Navy Admiral.

Raised by her aristocratic great-uncle Lord Mansfield and his wife in the 1700s, Belle’s lineage should afford her much more privilege than she is given, but the color of her skin prevents her from fully participating in the traditions of her social standing.

Outspoken, beautiful, and well-versed in the traditions of inequality, Belle sets out to end slavery in England.

Check out the intense clip above, where the young woman – played by Gugu Mbatha-Raw – challenges her great-uncle (Tom Wilkinson), right at the dining room table in front of the entire family.
