A suicide bomber detonated explosives at an outdoor World Cup screening site in northeast Nigeria on Tuesday night, killing 14 and injuring 26 people. Witnesses say a tricycle taxi was driven into the outdoor area in Damaturu, capital of Yobe state, before the explosion. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Boko Haram, the armed Islamic group that wants to turn Nigeria into an Islamic state, was suspected. And in a scene straight from a comedy starring Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy, an entire Vermont family assaulted a group of police officers during a melee that erupted after they were told to leave their knives in the car at a fun park. In world news, Sunni militants have taken control of Iraq’s largest oil refinery, located in Baiji. An official at the refinery confirmed the takeover on Wednesday. “The militants have managed to break in to the refinery. Now they are in control of the production units, administration building and four watch towers. This is 75 percent of the refinery.” The fighters are led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which aims to build a caliphate ruled on mediaeval precepts, but also include a broad spectrum of more moderate Sunnis, furious at what they see as oppression by Baghdad.
