The mother of the 14-year-old boy who is being accused of stabbing his classmate to death claims that her son was acting in self-defense after months of repetitive verbal abuse and bullying that left him suicidal.

According to the NY Daily News, Noel Estevez allegedly stabbed his former best friend, Timothy Crump, in the chest 3 times after school on Wednesday.

Crump was pronounced dead after being rushed to the Bronx-Lebanon hospital, and Estevez is being charged as an adult with second-degree manslaughter.

Yesterday, his mother Maria Estevez broke her silence for the first time since his arrest, telling the site that her child was afraid for his life.

Mrs. Estevez, who is currently behind bars in Rikers Island for drug charges, told the outlet:

He was protecting himself. I saw him on the news. I saw his face

The mother also told them that she blames the victim for pushing her special-needs son over the edge, and that the verbal abuse Estevez had received by his peers led him to attempt suicide in May.

While recovering from the suicide attempt in the hospital, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

She also says that her son could not take the abuse, which ranged from homophobic name-calling, to mean jokes about his speech impediment and even urinating on the Estevez family’s front door.

Judge Laurence Busching ordered Estevez to be held without bail and scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday
