Schwaza!

Talented singer and songwriter Jesse Boykins III engaged fans with an electric performance in concert with Apple’s special Black Music Month series at the Apple Store in Soho, NYC Friday night.

The 29-year-old singer has been labeled a neo-soul singer, but Boykins calls his sound, “World Soul.” Jesse talked about the influences and songwriting behind his new album Love Apparatus with hosts Francheska Medina and Shameless Maya.

The “B4 the Night Is Thru” singer talked about his writing process, which isn’t as spiritual as people believe.

“When I think about writing, it’s more of a form of expression to me,” he said. “So when I write, it doesn’t have to be any candles lit or anything like that. For the most part, it’s just anything that comes to my head – I write it down and I just develop it from there.”

He also gave advice about not falling into the pressure of the masses and being confident in his music.

“[People say] ‘You have so much potential,'” he said. “I think that means that I have the power to be great and I’m holding myself back from that. There’s been plenty of times in my career where I’ve had setbacks, but I always remind myself that if I’m doing what I love, I can be fearless in doing what I love. And that’s what’s always brought me out of my moments of darkness.”

Jesse kept the crowd on their feet during his exciting performances of “4 U 2 B Free,” “Greyscale,” “The Wonder Years,” and more.
