Today’s batch of racism news comes from the Dirty South. Surprising…

Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members were scrutinized for pinning flyers to cars in Atlanta, while two Florida officers were fired over their affiliation with the organization. Read on for more.

Flyer-Gate

Miles Keenlyside of Atlanta, Georgia was surprised to see a flyer on his car courtesy of the Ku Klux Klan.

According to WSB TV, Keenlyside and many other East Atlanta residents were greeted with recruitment flyers on their cars.

“This is something you hear about, but when you get it on your own personal car it makes it real,” Miles Keenlyside said. Keenlyside found a flyer on his car and, at first, said he thought it was a ticket. It was actually a flyer encouraging him to “Join the Klan. “Save the land, Join the Klan,” the flyer reads. It also said, “We are a law-abiding Christian organization.”

A KKK wizard talked to reporters about their flyer, which called attention to the group’s neighborhood watch and how they plan to continue handing out flyers to spread “white power.”

“This is our national flyer drive,” Grand Wizard Robert Jones said. “God is the author of segregation. He is the one who drew the color line.”

While the KKK continued to post flyers on cars and posters, many people retaliated and ripped the signs down. Cabbagetown resident Catlin Shay-Winkler said residents aren’t afraid of the organization and will continue to keep their neighborhood diverse and positive.

It Takes Two

Deputy Chief David Borst and Officer George Hunnewell lost their jobs with the Fruitland Police force in Florida after FBI reports discovered that the two men were affiliated with the Ku Klux Klan. These were the latest men to have ties to the organization, after another Fruitland officer was fired back in 2009.

Despite his dual resignations, Borst denied involvement with the Klan. Though Chief Issacs said he saw no indications that his deputy chief was a member of a notorious hate group, he acknowledged that he “read the [FBI] report, and it’s convincing.” Issacs also fired the other officer named in the report, Officer George Hunnewell.
