An Arizona politician, passionate about turning back buses of undocumented children facing danger in their countries, is probably cowering from embarrassment after he mistook a school bus carrying YMCA campers for immigrants.
His reasoning? The children had a look of fear on their faces. Probably because Arizona State Rep. Adam Kwasman leapt towards the bus with his protesting friends in what seemed like an attack.
“I was actually able to see some of the children in the buses,” Kwasman told Brahm Resnik, an Arizona-based reporter in a video interview. “The fear on their faces…. This is not compassion.”
The incident occurred when a yellow school bus pulled within sight of an anti-immigration protest on Tuesday. Kwasman, absolutely sure that he saw the paranoid and scared faces of undocumented children, went into action — in a now deleted tweet carrying a picture of the school bus, Kwasman wrote: “Bus coming in. This is not compassion. This is the abrogation of the rule of law.”
But he was wrong. Arizona-based reporter Brahm Resnik had to point out that the bus of “immigrants” was actually a bus full of YMCA campers on their way home or to some trip that Kwasman and his crew clearly ruined.
Kwasman acknowledged his mistake with this:
“Those children were sad too.”
Yeah, we bet.
He later tweeted: “Last tweet not the bus of illegal immigrant children. Thank God.”
In other ridiculous shit the GOP says about undocumented children, Florida Rep. Rich Nugent called immigrants at the border not children at all, but “gang affiliated persons from a culture of thievery, murder, and violence.”
No. We’re not kidding.
“A lot of these children … quote-unquote … ya know, the first caller mentioned it, ya know, they’re gang members. They’re gang affiliated,” Florida Republican said on WOCA radio Monday.
“Listen if you’re 14, 15, 16, 17 years old and you’re coming from a country that’s gang infested, particularly with MS-13-types. That is the most aggressive of all the street gangs. When you have those types coming across the border, they’re not children at that point. These kids have been brought up in a culture of thievery. A culture of murder, of rape. And now we are going to infuse them into the American culture. It’s just ludicrous.”
Never mind the fact that most children involved in this humanitarian crisis are eight years of age or younger. But hey, whatever works for your agenda.
