On Wednesday, a federal judge ruled that California’s death penalty system is so arbitrary and plagued with delay that it is unconstitutional. Despite the state having placed hundreds of inmates on death row, they have not executed a prisoner since 2006. Read about it here…[NYT]

It’s a good week for American progression. First, Thor becomes a woman. Now Captain America will soon be African-American. The change in characters was announced on the publisher’s official website on Wednesday. It is built around the retirement of Captain America’s original alter ego, Steve Rogers, who finds he has lost the extraordinary strength and agility he had once gained from injections of performance-enhancing “super soldier serum.” But for now, changes to both Thor and Captain America will be limited to the pages of a comic book. A South Carolina man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter after he hugged a 14-month-old child so hard, the boy stopped breathing and died. Robert Kemp, 26, told deputies he was playing with the child when he started to rub his eyes like he was tired. He put the boy in the crib with a bottle, but came back to a lifeless toddler. Jaylen Harris died from asphyxiation on June 27, 2013. Read about it here…[HuffPost]

And this happened. A Chicago business owner slapped a 79-year-old Cook County judge in the face, spit on her, and called her “Rosa Parks” after becoming angry that she was smoking near him outside the Daley Center. Read about it here…[ChicagoTribune]
