The person above, ladies and gentleman, is Sam Wilson.
He is the new Captain America. He’s also black.
For years, Sam Wilson played the role of The Falcon, the sidekick to the original Captain America, Steve Rogers. That will change this fall, when Wilson replaces Rogers as Captain America. This news was announced last night on The Colbert Report.
It’s an amazing deployment considering that other than Superman, there is no other superhero that screams America like Marvel’s Captain America.
And America has darker skin.
Comics have been around for a century. And while black people have had roles in comics…they have been marginal roles, at best.
With this news of a new, darker Captain America, we decided to look at the long, complicated history of black characters in superhero comics.
