Despite original numbers that had weekend shootings in Chicago at 40, police confirm that at least 47 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend, five of which were fatal, according to statistics released by the Chicago Police Department. The deaths included an 11-year-old girl, who was shot while attending a sleepover in Chicago’s South Side. Read about it here…[CNN]

Proving that he’s the poster child for anti-immigration sentiments, Texas Gov. Rick Perry is sending up to 1,000 National Guard troops to help secure the southern border, where tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central America have crossed into the United States this year in a surge that is deemed a humanitarian crisis. Perry is also urging President Obama to hire an additional 3,000 border patrol agents for the Texas border, which would eventually replace the temporary guard forces. Read about it here…[CNN]

A Florida judge has denied a “Stand Your Ground” self-defense hearing for Marissa Alexander, the 33-year-old woman who was sentenced to 20 years in jail for firing a warning shot at her abusive husband. Duval County Circuit Court Judge James Daniel denied Alexander an evidentiary hearing seeking immunity from prosecution under the state’s “Stand Your Ground” rule, a court clerk said on Monday.
