Zoe Saldana is an actual force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, but she’s also the goddess of the sci-fi realm. And her title is well-earned after nailing three movie franchises with Star Trek, Avatar, and most recently, Guardians of the Galaxy.

In addition to landing various film gigs, the star has also been featured on countless magazine covers, including The Hollywood Reporter, which tapped her for its latest issue. On the cover, the flawless beauty is featured in a gold halter with matching gold arm cuffs, lying in a bed of comic books.

Inside, the mommy-to-be sat down to talk about her interest in the intergalactic franchises and being a woman of color in Hollywood. After nearly quitting the acting game a couple years back, Zoe decided to give it another go. Leaving behind films and aspects of the industry that didn’t fit her personality, she said it was almost like sci-fi has always been calling her name:

“You just gravitate naturally to what your heart yearns for. And I grew up in a very science fiction-driven household. It was odd for me to grow up and go out in the world and not see other women going crazy for science fiction.”

But to Zoe, playing a role in sci-fi is more than reliving a childhood memory. She also stated that it’s a world that allows for a strong female character:

“She was eye candy. But that’s true of every genre. Eighty percent of what’s out there is told through the point of view of a male. I can sit down with so many filmmakers for so many projects and play so many actors’ girlfriends or wives. But in sci-fi, I can play Gamora.”

For those who may not know, Gamora is an alien assassin with supernatural powers.

Zoe might play a powerful female in her films and in her personal life, but she admitted that being a woman of color in the real life has some setbacks. She often gets mistaken for other actresses of color, including Thandie Newton, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Kerry Washington. But it’s nothing she can’t handle with a brush off the shoulder.

“People ask me if I’m offended that I’m confused with every other black actress out there. “Doesn’t it bother you that people think you’re all the same person?” No. Because one time I entered a restaurant and there were all these beautiful blond girls around a table, probably all from Orange County. It felt like it might have been a high school reunion or something. There were like 20 beautiful girls, but they were all the same. I couldn’t tell any of them apart.”

It might be an issue to some, but when your skin color goes from brown to green to blue on screen, Zoe said she doesn’t want to waste a lot of her time thinking about color.

“I don’t want to spend my life thinking about all the impossibilities I face when I wake up in the morning. But the reality is, I’m a woman of color in America. That itself is enough for you to wake up and go, “Oh, f—!”

Zoe has a fiery attitude, stunning looks, and great acting skills, and she’s also reportedly expecting her first child. Girl’s got it all.
