The Palestinian death toll in the three-week-long fighting between Hamas and Israel may stand at nearly 1,200, but a new poll is showing that twice as many Americans blame Hamas for the violence as they do Israel.

In fact, about 40 percent of Americans believe Hamas is responsible for the Gaza conflict. Only 19 percent blame Israel.

From to CBS:

U.S. voters in a new Pew Research Center poll show a wide political divide on the issue in addition to substantial support for Israel in the Middle East conflict.

The Pew survey conducted from July 24-27 shows that 60 percent of Republicans say Hamas is most responsible for the current violence, while less than half of that percentage of Democrats (29 percent) agree with Hamas’ responsibility.

But not everyone has a definitive position. Twenty-eight percent of Americans polled said they didn’t know who to blame and 14 percent blamed both sides for the continued fighting.

The results of the poll come as at least 17 people were killed and 160 wounded in an Israeli strike that hit a fruit and vegetable market in Gaza city. On Tuesday, another strike killed 19 at a UN-run school.

From the BBC:

Hundreds of people were shopping in the market in Shejaiya, a spokesman for the Gaza health ministry said.

The attack came during a four-hour truce called by the Israeli military. Hamas, which controls Gaza, had rejected the truce as meaningless.

Meanwhile, Israel said three more of its soldiers had been killed in Gaza.

Palestinian doctors also said that another Israeli air strike after the partial humanitarian ceasefire was announced had killed seven people in Khan Younis.

Nearly 60 Israelis have been killed as a result of the fighting.
