New Harper’s Bazaar fashion director Carine Roitfeld recently released her “Icons by Roitfeld” list, naming this generation’s most promising style icons, some of whom might be a little unexpected.

The CFDA named Rihanna the most stylish star of our time, but according to Ms. Roitfeld, there are some others in the running, including Lady GagaIman, Linda EvangelistaPenelope Cruz, Cindy CrawfordLara Stoneand Joan Smalls.

Mother Monster snagged the cover, looking pretty in pink in a matching Chanel set with a twist. The tweed suit features a blazer, bra, very mini skirt and fishnet stockings. To add to the unique look, Gaga wears a large hat over a full head of blonde locks and carries her little black dog as an accessory.

Karl Lagerfeld did the honors of interviewing the diva. And while Gaga is known for her eccentric and far-out costumes, from rocking Kermit the Frog on her body, to wearing little to nothing but a thong and a wig, the Chanel designer asked the ever-changing singer how she manages to stay true to her iconic style.

“Classic for me is something that changes all the time, like a drifting anchor. Even though I’m changing all the time, I’m always thinking of iconography—which is repetition of images—so I’m always different. I’m in a way wearing the same outfit over and over, but I’m just a different expression of the same woman. When I leave the house, I bear the souls of fashionistas who came before me; I continue to live glamorously to celebrate them. I’m just being me.”

As for what’s next in Gaga’s big hat of fashion and street style secrets, she says that vintage fashion speaks to her.

“I’ve been recently enjoying looking far and wide for the best vintage fashion I can find. Clothing with a story, a past. Heavy fabrics, jewels, veils. My latest trip is feeling a connection to all women throughout history through fashion. I love wearing clothes knowing that I’m carrying the spirit of previous fashionistas, and living out more of their fantasies, and my own. I believe clothes carry the soul of the designer and the person wearing them forever, so I look for clothes with a soul. Perhaps it’s something only I can see. But I know it’s real.”

The full “Icons by Roitfeld” list will be featured in the September issue of Harper’s Bazaar. Lady Gaga, Penelope Cruz, and Linda Evangelista do cover duties for the mag, which will be available in 46 countries. Check them out below.
