John Legend made a bold statement earlier this week, when he took the stage at the What’s Going On Benefit Concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

The singer, who is just one of a handful of celebrities who have been vocal about the tragic shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, stepped out on stage in a black “Don’t Shoot” T-shirt. He paired the shirt with a white blazer.

While on stage, Legend performed hits from Marvin’s socially conscious R&B catalogue, many of which struck a chord with concert-goers. After his performance, John introduced several young poets who stole the show by performing a piece that spoke on the current state of political and social affairs in the United States. The “All Of Me” singer and concert organizers tasked the young artists to “respond to Marvin Gaye’s music in a contemporary context.”

Their poem touched on everything, from government censorship to the situation in Ferguson, Mo., to the infamous Steubenville rape case.
