West Florissant Avenue in Ferguson, Mo. saw less violence and tension Thursday night, as demonstrators continued to march in protest of the fatal shooting of unarmed teen Michael Brown

A street that has seen turmoil and hostility over the last two weeks cooled down, with only seven arrests made overnight. Capt. Ronald S. Johnson said at a press conference shortly after 1 a.m. that five demonstrators were arrested for failure to disperse, while the other two were taken in for minor offenses.

“Today we had a good day,” said Johnson, who is in charge of the security forces on patrol in Ferguson

Gov. Jay Nixon said he would withdraw the small Missouri National Guard unit that was sent in Monday. The unit has been guarding the “unified command” headquarters at the Westfall Plaza, formerly known as Northland. A few soldiers and a Humvee remained on duty Thursday amongst the cluster of news trucks, which seem to be shrinking as the days go on.

The announcement that the St. Louis County grand jury began reviewing the case on Wednesday, and the visit on that same day from U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has also helped ease the tensions between protesters and authorities. Capt. Johnson says he thinks people are noticing that the process is beginning, and that most importantly, the President is watching.
