The countdown is on, folks. That’s right: We’re just about two weeks away from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, where fashion folk from around the world will be flocking to NYC’s Lincoln Center to see what’s hot next season.

This also means that the final days of summer are slipping out of our fingers, with fall—and then another ridiculously cold winter—nipping at our trendy single-strap sandals. It’s still too hot to dust off all our coats and jackets just yet, but there are a few trends we saw back in February that can help make the transition from summer to fall seamless.

50 Shades of Gray

No matter how harsh the weather, winters always call for white, and there’s never a wrong time to rock all-black-everything, even during the scorching hot summer. But there is a gray area between the two, as seen on the runways of Ralph LaurenJason Wu, and Michael Kors, where we saw proof that there’s nothing drab about it. Mix pieces of different types and textures to master this monochromatic trend.

The Bolder, The Better

No need for a statement necklace this season, because you can let them know how you really feel without saying a peep. Designers like Karen Walker and Vera Wang let the apparel do all the talking while the models did the walking. Express yourself by wearing your heart/sentiment/saying on your sleeves. Literally.

Shine Bright Like A Sequin

During New York Fashion Week, we hopped into a time machine and went back to the disco days, or at least it seemed like we did. Marc Jacobs models shimmered down the runway covered in sequins from head-to-toe, while Delpozo and Phillip Lim followed the sparkly suit. If you’re down to get glitzy, try taking a casual look up a notch by adding a sequined blazer, or maybe just a clutch if you don’t want to get too Donna Summers on ’em.

Mad For Even More, Colorful Plaid

Nothing really says it’s fall like plaid does—it’s a season staple. But rather than offering the typical lumberjack look with red and black patchwork pieces, AltuzurraDelpozo, and Thakoon were just a few brands who brightened them up a bit. Try trading in your go-to flannel with something of a little more (read: slightly obnoxious) flair.
