The VMAs were filled with show-stopping performances, but Common got serious for a second to lead a heartfelt moment of silence for Michael Brown and the town of Ferguson. The rapper, who was on stage to present the Best Hip-Hop Video, cited the genre as an outlet of social change in wake of the protests in Ferguson. He also called “for justice for Brown and for peace in this country and in the world.” Watch it above. [Huff Post]

British officials have identified the man who beheaded an American journalist on video last week. British intelligence officials claim their extensive search has helped them find the British militant responsible for the murder of James Foley. The Ebola virus has taken the lives of two people from the Congo. The nation’s health minister Felix Kabange Numbi says the deaths are unrelated to the outbreak in West Africa that has killed over 1,400 people. Kabange says that 11 people were sick, while 80 others were being traced. Djera, the town the victims reside in, is currently under quarantine. The video that shocked the nation of a man killed by the police just days after Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, has experts believing the shooting was justified. Cornell law professor Jens David Ohlin and former Department of Labor special agent David Long claim that the police were following training procedures since the man posed a threat with a knife. As police officers try to get the man to surrender, the suspect allegedly showed signs of harm to the officers, thus proving their actions to be within police training. [Think Progress]
