According to the Huffington Post, the shootings took place on the South and West Sides of Chicago. Both men were allegedly armed and pointed their weapons at police before they were shot and killed.
Police responded to a call of armed men in the street in the city’s Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side about 7:10 p.m. When officers approached a group of men who matched the description given, one of the men ran away.
After officers gave chase, police say the man pointed a gun toward one of them and the officer opened fire, killing 19-year-old Roshad McIntosh.In a separate incident less than two hours later in the South Side neighborhood of Auburn Gresham, two police officers on foot patrol responded to the scene of a shooting that had wounded three people, according to the Chicago Tribune.
They opened fire on him after he pointed a gun at the officers, the Tribune reports. It is believed the man was 17 or 18 years old; he has not been identified as of Monday afternoon.
Witnesses of the first incident claim that McIntosh was trying to cooperate with police when he was killed. Little is known about the second incident, but police claim the suspect, 20-year-old Desean Pittman was seen standing above someone lying on the ground when he was confronted by the police.
Three victims were wounded in the first incident, including a man who was shot in the head.
The three people wounded in the initial shooting were all taken to the hospital for their injuries, including a man who had been shot in the head, police said. One of the victims later died from his wounds. Amelio Johnson, 22, of the 10800 block of South Vernon Avenue, was pronounced dead at 1:09 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Since the beginning of the year there have been 201 murders in the city, almost halfway from its total of 440 murders in 2013.
