BARE necessities.

When your big sister is Jessica Biel, it would be nothing shy of inhumane not to seek some familial advice when embarking on a new business endeavor. Knowing this fact, Jessica’s younger bro Justin reached out before he began launching his accessories line.

Justin Biel and his best friend-turned-business partner Grason Ratowsky developed a concept for an eco-conscious, socially responsible collection of bags made out of burlap coffee sacks, which later became the basis for BARE. BARE is Jessica, Justin, and Garson’s Denver-based company that officially took off in 2013.

Jessica recently sat down with YAHOO! Style to, essentially, BARE it all. Keep reading for excerpts from the interview.

On her original thoughts about the business project:

“I thought it was an amazing idea and I trust them and believe in them.”

On what she wanted from the bags:

“I wanted the bags to be big and more elegant-feeling in terms of what kind of leather we were using, what kind of hardware we were using,” says Jessica. “Given the raw quality of the burlap, I wanted a nice element of luxury there.”

On the best part of the product:

“What’s amazing about a BARE bag is that it evokes the life that it’s had before you, “ adds Jessica. “The repurposed materials, the prints, the stories—what does that mean for you? Where can you go with it?”
