More details have been released about Joan Rivers’ untimely death.

According The New York Daily News, the legendary comedian was initially scheduled for a routine procedure on her vocal chords, but a biopsy was done on her vocal chords by a member of her entourage.

The routine surgical procedure Joan Rivers was supposed to undergo turned deadly when a doctor who arrived at the clinic with the legendary comic’s entourage performed an unplanned biopsy on her vocal cords, a medical source who was briefed on the case told The News.

Such a procedure is not supposed to be performed outside of a hospital, according to medical experts.

The Aug. 28 biopsy at Yorkville Endoscopy, an E. 93rd St. clinic that usually only deals with digestive issues, caused Rivers’ vocal chords to seize — a condition doctors call a laryngospasm — cutting off her air supply, the source said.

While the member of her entourage was a doctor who was a specializes in the ear, nose and throat, the staff at the Yorkville Endoscopy allowed him to perform the biopsy. The doctor claims that he performed the procedure because he noticed there was “something” on her vocal chords.

After falling into cardiac arrest during the unplanned biopsy, Rivers went into a coma died a week later. The source later added that if the comedienne was in a hospital setting, she might have survived.

Such a procedure is not supposed to be performed outside of a hospital, according to medical experts.

“A biopsy like that should only be done in a hospital setting,” the source said. “If she had been in a hospital when it happened, she might have been okay.”

An autopsy released earlier this week showed no clear signs of Rivers’ death.

There haven’t been any criminal charges on the clinic or River’s doctor but the late comedienne signed off on the endoscopy– not the biopsy which can have the staff at fault for her death.

The State Department Health will continue to look into her death.
